Transit Strike Victory?

Wed Dec 28, 2005 at 05:48:30 AM PDT

The Executive board of local 100 on the TWU approved the latest offer from the MTA, which is nearly identical to the one suggested by the mediators on Friday.

Bloomberg's vastly overblown claim that the strike cost the city $1 Billion aside, who won what I consider to be the most important labor battle so far in the 21st century (paling in comparison with the ultimate battle agains Wal-Mart, but since we've only fought skirmishes so far, I'm not counting that).  The details and poll after the break

The pay raises:
3% first year
4% 2nd year
3.5% 3rd year

Pensions:
Pension age stays at 55 for all workers
Contributions to pension by workers dropped
millions in givebacks from pensions (helps offset some of the fines for striking workers under the Taylor Laws)

Health Insurance
Workers to donate 1.5% to health insurance (currently 0%)

other goodies
MLK day now a holiday
0.5% for additional training
MTA to hire independent consultant to help improve disciplinary system

Contract for 37 months, means the next contract ends Jan 15, 2009. (no more holiday strikes)
*Updated* a couple of other nuggets - I haven't seen this in print yet, but heard Roger Toussant listing these things in his press conference: - disability for bus drivers when they are assaulted - death benefit for workers who die on the job - paid maternity leave
